A good performance

The 2nds had a tough game against Old Walcountians last weekend (25.10.2008)and went down 12-24. The distinguishing aspect of the game was the size of OW's pack and I for one am feeling bruised today.

Media were there on time and after a good warm-up (with the opposition turning up 40 mins late) we exploded out of the blocks. The pace was fast with the backs executing some precise moves in mid field and finding rewards out wide against a older, slower back line. Media scored two good tries in the first 15 mins, both through the back with Michael our new antipodean outside centre running great lines and crashing over. Jason "looking good" Coles marshalled the backs well and put in some good chips over the top. Pete Guest took the ball on in the centres and Ish and Nick Corcoran, found good space and made sensible use of the ball. It was great to have Glyn back on the pitch and his service and pick-and-go behind a pack which spent a lot of the afternoon going backwards at set piece was needed.

I think Media were slightly shocked at going ahead so early in the game! We switched off a little and let OW's play their game plan which involved giving the ball to one-of-three "Lurches" who smashed it up the center at every opportunity. There was some great defence on our try-line and Media held Walcountians at bay for much of the first half, but the pressure led to us conceding a try despite some aggressive tackling and carrying from Matt playing in his Media debut.

The second half saw OW's luring us into a wrestling match with their pack and starved of possession we spent most of the 2nd half defending; it was all about the tackling. Ali made some big hits along with JP, but our replacement Flankers Shens and Nick Reed were everywhere. Nick deserves a special mention for making about 5 dump tackles on their forwards which raised the game and led a great break by Colsie down one wing with the ball going through hands to the other wing and being just inches from an amazing try. Our forwards carried on battling and Rob Condon and Max Peiters got through a lot of work, in the end we were ground down and rolling mauls and scrums sapped some of out energy.

All in all it was a good performance.

I think the one thing we must immediately sort across both teams is the line-out. This week was tricky as the opposition’s lifters were probably taller than our jumpers, but it's going to be very hard to reach out potential if we are losing 75% of set piece.
I think the 1's are probably feeling the same; we need to spend a bit of time on a Wednesday night working on our line-out. Everyone needs to know how the calls work how we are lifting and jumping. I think if we get this sorted we will have a lot more possession and be able to control games.
Good turnout at the Latch in the evening, anyone owning up to getting it on with those drunken hockey girls!?

Weekend wins for all!

Despite horrendous playing conditions, both Firsts and Occies managed great wins. Early in the second half, the Firsts found themselves 10-nil down against Worth Old Boys. However, the forwards rallied to provide the basis of a hard-fought 24-10 victory. Meanwhile the Occies beat Weybridge Vandals, scoring 3 tries in, what sounded like, a water polo game.

Firsts beat Pelhamians

Unfortunately, yet again, the Occies game was called off. See the members sections for more detail.

However, the Firsts beat Pelhamians, 37-6, to turn around their recent poor form.  Our next set of games aren't until 6th January, so relax and enjoy the holidays.

Happy Christmas guys!

Time to turn around our poor run of form

Unfortunately, it hasn't been the best of times for London Media. The firsts, losing two league games in a row, have relinquished their top position in the league. However, still in second place, they are in a great position to show their mettle for the rest of the season.

The Occies lost, in a very exciting game (4 tries to 5), to the Law Society. Unfortunately, the occies had to take to the pitch with only 14 men, so they were always up against it.

After a break last weekend, both teams are back to competitive action this weekend. The occies play Becs Old Boys. The firsts play Pelhamians. These are our last games before Christmas; let's make the most of it!

In news, the Christmas Ball took place on Saturday 2nd. A great time was had by all. A massive thanks to Stretch for putting in such an effort.

News update

Last weekend, the Occies game was called off at the last minute because the opposition couldn't field a team. Unfortunate. Regardless, a game is being scheduled for this weekend, so let the guys know of your availability.

Last Saturday, the Firsts, playing away from home, beat Reigate 58-7. This victory leaves Media on top of the league. However, this weekend's opposition Raynes Park are also unbeaten. To some extent, the season begins now! So get your availability in to Matt / Benny / Nick.

Some new match reports have been added in the members only section... Enjoy...

Finally, tickets for the Chrismas Ball are going fast. Check out the social scene section for more details.

Firsts Remain Top of League
Over the last two weeks, the Firsts recorded large victories, leaving them on top of Surrey 3 (if only on points difference).

On 14th October, London Media saw of Stoke Park's challenge with a 35-nil victory. The result was born from a great team effort, but Frapps, Graham and Mongo were very impressive.

Then, last Saturday, London Media continued their undefeated league campaign with a massive 78-nil victory over Lightwater.

Unfortunately, last weekend the Occies lost 40ish-nil to a London Exiles XV. However, this weekend's friendly fixtures offer an opportunity to reverse our fortunes. Please let Matt and Nick know of your availability.

Occies and Vets both win impressively!
With the Firsts enjoying a weekend off, both the Occies and Vets recorded impressive victories.

First up, the Vets won by 60-odd points. Then, spurred on by an impressive forward display, the Occies then beat Old Caterhamians 43-7.

Media Go Top!
London Media are sitting top of the Surrey 3 League thanks to a 60-nil win over Wandsworthians. Kitted out in awesome new gear, Media were unforgiving in attack.

A special mention must go to John Sugden, who scored 4 excellent tries on the day; including one from inside his own 22!

New Polo Shirts
Lads, Here are six different polo shirt designs. What do you lot think? I quite like Option 5. I can change around the designs (length of sleeves, pattern, colours etc.).

If we come to a decision, I'll order by the end of the week. We should get them early November.

Option 1 - Option 2 - Option 3 - Option 4 - Option 5 - Option 6

Media beat Teddington: 28-7
Congratulations to those involved in Saturday's win over Teddington in the League. In a good game, which was unfortunately delayed due to a serious neck injury sustained by an opposition player, Media outscored Teddington 4 tries to 1.

Our next league game takes place this Saturday (1st October) against Wandworthians at our temporary home pitch in Richmond. Please get in contact with Matt regarding your availability.

Medic! Man Down!
James "Glassbones" Clements (pictured) is out for the next few months. He broke his jaw during the defeat to Old Becs. James requires surgery to place a plate in his jaw. Text him - wish him well.

As a tribute to James, the Members Only section has been updated...

Media bow out the Cup
As a result of losing 27-15 to Old Becs on Saturday, the Firsts have been knocked out of the "Junior Vase" cup competition. Our first league game (against Teddington) is scheduled for this weekend.

Diesel Spillage in Battersea
Due to a diesel spillage in Battersea, London Media home games will be played in Richmond's Pools on the Park complex. Richmond station is the handiest train stop. We expect to play out of Richmond until late-October. The intention is that after games, we hit the Triple Crown for a few beers, then on to the Latchmere for some old-skool socialising.

Apparently the diesel spillage was caused by some sort of leaking engine during a fair, which took place on our pitch over the off-season.

LMRFC AGM
London Media's AGM took place, on Wednesday 26th July 2006, in the grandiose surroundings of the Latch (not pictured left).

The Committee met to plan and strategise the rise of LMRFC in the forthcoming season; there were decisions that effect everyone, including the monumental decision to retain Donald on the Committee, and a minor item of complete re-branding! Yes, it's true! We will be in new colours next year; that should fool the old fella that watches us into thinking he is watching a proper rugby club.

Minutes from the meeting are available in the Members Only section.
